The Bent Arrow Trail was severely damaged by a mudslide in December. Water saturated the soil when a significant amount of rain fell in a short period of time. This caused a section of trail to slide down the slope.
After assessing the damage, State Parks closed the trail. Trail crews began discussing the damage, what needed to be done and then organized a series of events to repair this popular trail.
Our first event had a large turnout of 29 people - including members of the Trails Council, the Sierra Club Task Force, Cal State Channel Islands Trail Corps and others.
Several cubic yards of dirt were removed. We used 8ft (timbers for the wall. There were 9 rows of boards. Rebar (36" in length) was driven through the boards and into the earth.
Our crews took turns, digging, moving buckets of dirt and gravel, hammering, sawing, carrying and fitting the boards together. The project took several outings.
The end result is a trail that has been repaired and safe to use.
